Black snake invades weld shop

I was working one Saturday, way back in the 1980's, as a QA inspector in a weld shop for a large multi-national corporation...  I heard a commotion out back, and found out a large black snake was trying to get into the building, and the welders were about to chop off its head with a shovel.  I'm no expert on snakes, but I was sure it was non poisonous, so I attempted to grab it by its tail to throw it over a fence and hopefully, to freedom.  As I was walking to the fence, I had to keep shaking it down to keep it from reaching my hand.  When I wasn't paying attention, it reached up and bit me on the thumb.  I dropped it then, before I could get it over the fence.  One of the evil villagers (welders) picked it up with his shovel and tossed it over, so as far as I know, the snake survived that day.  My boss heard about it and had me sent to the emergency room of a newly opened hospital.  I was their first snake bite case.
